BILL BAIRD was a pioneer in the battle for reproductive rights. He was jailed eight times in five states in the 1960s for lecturing on birth control. His advocacy on behalf of reproductive rights began in 1963 when, as a medical student, he witnessed the tragic and bloody death of an unmarried African American mother of nine children who died of a self-inflicted coat hanger abortion while staggering into Harlem Hospital for help. When he spoke on the subject of reproductive freedom, he usually gave away birth control samples to his listeners. He was arrested for these activities in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Wisconsin. In 1967, students at Boston University petitioned Baird to challenge Massachusetts’s new law, because it made it a crime for unmarried persons to obtain contraceptives.
